Did a car crash break a bone into many small pieces?

On Behalf of | Mar 18, 2026 | Injuries

Broken bones are a relatively common car crash injury, and people typically expect to make a rapid and full recovery. However, fractures vary drastically in their severity. Some broken bones are much more expensive and difficult to treat than others.

Collisions that cause crush injuries, situations that apply twisting force to a person’s limbs and other unusual circumstances can potentially break a bone into numerous small pieces. When that occurs, the injured person may have a much lengthier and more costly recovery ahead of them.

Comminuted fractures generally require surgery

When a human bone breaks into many small pieces, medical professionals refer to that as a comminuted fracture. The body generally cannot heal an injury that severe without significant medical intervention.

Surgery is almost always necessary to set the bone. In fact, most comminuted fractures require the surgical placement of medical devices intended to support the bone during its recovery. Pins, rods and plates are likely needed to address a comminuted fracture. The patient may have to undergo a second surgical procedure in the future to remove those devices.

Additionally, the bone may not heal quite as well as it might in a scenario involving a single break to the bone. The injured person may need to address lost future earning potential related to long-term functional limitations caused by a severe fracture.

Basic liability insurance policies may not offer enough coverage to pay for the medical expenses and lost wages that a person with a comminuted fracture incurs. Working with an attorney to file a personal injury lawsuit may be necessary for those with more serious fractures caused by a car wreck.
