Automotive technology, especially when it comes to safety, has gotten much better. There are new types of tech today that simply didn’t exist in previous decades of vehicles. Examples include blind spot monitors, forward collision warning systems, backup cameras and automatic braking systems.
All of this technology can be helpful, and it does assist in avoiding some accidents. However, serious car accident cases haven’t really declined in recent years. What some researchers believe is that the technology may be getting better, but it is the drivers who are getting worse. There are two ways that this can happen.
Driver distraction
First of all, some types of technology can be relatively distracting. It’s easier for a driver to use a GPS than to use a paper map in the car, but either one means the driver has to periodically look away from the road. A driver who uses a backup camera may not pay enough attention to their surroundings. Drivers who are trying to use their technology and make adjustments or change settings may become distracted from the road.
Complacency
The second issue is that there are drivers who get complacent, knowing that the technology is there to prevent an accident. If a driver believes that their car will always warn them when someone is in their blind spot, are they less likely to check their mirrors? Drivers should use technology to supplement their own safe driving practices, but too many drivers just use it in place of those safe practices.
