Why the location of a brain injury matters

On Behalf of | Jul 25, 2024 | Injuries

Not all brain injuries are the same. There can be drastic differences in severity, for example, or very different causes. One brain injury could happen due to blunt force trauma in a car accident, while another could be due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.

One of the most important factors is the location of that brain injury. Where it takes place can drastically impact how it affects a person’s future, along with their odds of a full recovery.

Diffuse injuries

A diffuse brain injury harms a wide area within the brain. It’s often harder for people to fully recover from these types of injuries than many others. The brain can’t always create new brain cells, so it has to look for new neural pathways. However, when the damage is spread throughout the brain, finding new pathways for all of these connections is difficult.

By contrast, a localized brain injury may be much more limited in scope. This can make it easier for the brain to find a workaround, and a person may seem to experience a full recovery.

The location of the injury also influences the way that it changes a person‘s life. The symptoms they see are going to be much different. One person could have a brain injury that leaves them with full cognitive function but limited physical mobility, while another may have no mobility problems but could have trouble with mental processing. One injury victim could struggle with speech, while another might struggle with memory.
